Truth in a Postmodern World

Voddie Baucham is not a name that too many are familiar with. He delivered a message at the 2006 Desiring God National Conference that I have recommended to many people. It's entitled, "The Supremacy of Christ and Truth in a Postmodern World," and it is well worth your time. You can download it and listen to it here.

hi pastors.
i think you preach a sermon regarding life before birth, abortion, etc.
i'm aware of people in our congregation who believe that abortion is acceptable under certain conditions, and some people who believe that a fertilized egg, is "just a bunch of cells."

The church (well the worldly form of it anyway) has become so tainted with this postmodern thought. Why do you, pastor, think this is? It becomes so confusing for people that are not christians... for them to see so many different types of "christianity". It corrupts the testimony of the true church... and non-Christians charge the church as being divisive because of it.

Surely, we must rejoice in the truth of Jesus Christ.

Jennifer,

Thanks for your comment. It is unfortunate that there are professing Christians who support abortion under the premise that a fertilized egg is "just a bunch of cells." This is most likely because these people are thinking about what they think is right without starting from a theocentric mindset. They have their opinions about what is right and fair and run with them. Unfortunately for some of them, even when confronted with the principles of God's Word, they would rather act on their own understanding. I can see why this would burden you, but be encouraged that if they are truly in Christ, God is continuing to work in their lives and will hopefully lead them to the truth. He always finishes His work.

In Him,

Patrick

Hey Nate,

The easiest explanation is just that this is the cultural trend of the day. We live in a postmodern society. If the church does not actively protect itself from the dangerous philosophies of this world, it will become susceptible to their influence. It may be confusing to people that there seem to be "different kinds" of church (and this is indeed frustrating!), but we just need to stick to "doing church" God's way. We can't just constantly react to the opinions of men. If we did, church would constantly be changing. God has clearly prescribed for us how church is to be done. In regards to style, I know that the Bible does not necessarily say whether churches need to be conservative or contemporary. But I do feel it is a problem when God's holy (or "set apart") church blends right in with the world.

In His grace,

Patrick
